A United Nations armored vehicle was involved in a traffic accident Tuesday morning in Lima's Chorrillos district after crashing into two private vehicles and a streetlight pole.
The emergency was reported at 7:16 a.m. (local time) and prompted the deployment of two units from the General Volunteer Firefighters Corps of Peru.
The crews arrived at the accident scene at the intersection of El Sol and Los Lirios Avenues to assist possible victims and support efforts to remove the heavy military vehicle.
According to initial accounts gathered by Serenazgo (municipal security) personnel, the white UN armored vehicle was being driven by a Peruvian Army member.
The driver reportedly said the unit suffered a mechanical failure related to its braking system.
As a result of the impact, two private vehicles were damaged. The crash also damaged a streetlight pole.
Images recorded at the scene show the extent of the damage caused by the military vehicle.
One of the affected owners, identified as Maria Milagros Jara, said she was inside her home when she heard the loud noise from the crash.
Likewise, a woman collecting recyclable materials who was near the area said she had to run to avoid being struck by the armored vehicle.
Police and emergency personnel arrived at the scene to secure the area and carry out the corresponding procedures.
Authorities are investigating the exact causes of the accident and assessing the damage caused by the armored vehicle.
