Peruvian and British authorities have highlighted the mutual interest that exists between Peru and the United Kingdom to strengthen cooperation ties in matters related to climate change, green finance, forest conservation, sustainable infrastructure, as well as in the field of environmental science and research.

This was highlighted by the Peruvian Ministry of Environment (Minam), which specified that these were topics addressed during the meeting between Minister Modesto Montoya and United Kingdom Ambassador to Peru, Kate Harrisson, held in Lima last Tuesday.

In this sense, the foreign diplomat reiterated the commitment of her Government to collaborate with Peru, within the framework of the Memorandum of Understanding for Climate Action between Minam and the British Embassy in Lima.

Within this framework, the Peruvian minister and the British ambassador addressed the importance of the Biodiverse Landscapes Fund, created by the United Kingdom, to reduce poverty and boost economic development in communities located in environmentally-valuable landscapes.

Globally speaking, it will support six landscapes located in different regions of the planet. In South America, the Andean-Amazonian landscape of the Peru-Ecuador border (which includes the Cóndor-Kutukú Conservation Corridor) was selected to become a beneficiary of the fund, considering the great biodiversity and associated natural resources that exist in said ecosystem.

At the meeting, the importance of continuing to work within the framework of the Climate Action Group and to continue collaborating on the initiative for the creation of the National Botanical Garden, which is projected to be implemented in the future Ciudad Bicentenario (Bicentennial City) in Lima's Ancon district.

Ambassador Harrisson highlighted the importance of the Finance for the Amazon, announced by the UK during the previous United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26), in which Peru will be included.

Thanks to this effort, the sustainable use of natural resources will be promoted in harmony with indigenous and local communities.

Lastly, Minam recalled that the United Kingdom —within the framework of the United Nations General Assembly in September 2019— announced the creation of the Biodiverse Landscapes Fund, as a program aimed at the attention to conservation, poverty reduction, and climate in a range of biologically-diverse transboundary landscapes around the world.
