The Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs highlighted the ties of friendship between Peru and the United Kingdom on Wednesday, while marking the 200th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations.

The government agency shared the greeting messages from Peru's Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister Ignacio Higueras and UK Minister for Americas and Caribbean David Rutley in a video posted on social media.

Rutley remarked that Peru and the United Kingdom share three core values that have kept them united through the centuries: friendship, collaboration, and sustainability.

"Our friendship with Peru goes back to the day of its independence, supported by the British Admiral (Martin) Guisse and General Miller. Since then, we have flourished the relationship, cemented in our shared values. Our work to promote human rights, democracy, and gender equality is testimony to the enduring friendship between our two countries," the UK minister noted.

Moreover, Rutley mentioned that both nations have a long history of collaboration in many aspects, such as education, business, health, and specially in infrastructure.

"We will continue building on our partnership for many years to come," he added.

Finally, the British official stated that the UK shares Peru's ambition on the critical climate agenda, at the time when limiting global warming is still possible.

For his part, Peruvian Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister Ignacio Higueras underscored that it has been 200 fruitful years, based on mutual respect and shared principles such as defense to democracy, promotion and protection of human rights, and environmental conservation, among others.

The deputy minister welcomed the visit of David Rutley to Peru, with whom he led the events commemorating the 200 years of diplomatic relations in Lima.

The Peruvian diplomat went on to say that, for the same purpose, former Foreign Affairs Minister Ana Cecilia Gervasi traveled to London to meet with UK Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs, James Cleverly.

"Our relationship is strong and fruitful, and we want to continue to deepen it comprehensively. We look to the future together, sure that we will continue to strengthen our political dialogue; sure that British investment will continue to flow into Peru, since we are reliable partners; and sure that our cultural and educational links will continue to grow," Higueras concluded.
