16:00 | Lima, May. 7.

Transportation and Communications Minister Nicolas Bustamante has highlighted the importance of private investment worth 1.6 billion in Jorge Chavez International Airport, which will be essential for the development of tourism.

"We welcome private investment, which is a sign that businesspeople believe in and support the government's economic policy," he said during an unannounced visit to observe expansion and improvement works at Peru's main airport.

Bustamante explained that works include three components: the construction of the second runway which is 95% complete; the new control tower which also shows 95% completion; and the new passenger terminal that is in its initial stage and whose deadline comes in January 2025.

For his part, Lima Airport Partners (LAP) General Manager Juan Jose Salmon stated that works have not stopped and are progressing in accordance with the provisions of the agreement signed by the MTC and LAP, which confirm the willingness to improve the development conditions of the air terminal that will become Latin America's most modern airport.

"Next July, we plan to hand over the control tower to the Peruvian Corporation of Airports and Commercial Aviation (Corpac), for the implementation of the air navigation equipment; therefore, the new control tower and the second runway might be ready at the end of this year, jointly," said the LAP officer.

Agreements

On April 29, MTC and LAP signed a memorandum of understanding in which fundamental commitments were established for the development of the nation. They guarantee the continuity of expansion project works at Jorge Chavez International Airport.

In the signed document, LAP commits to building a new 180,000-square-meter passenger terminal, which should be operational in January 2025. This construction will generate more than 15,000 jobs and turn Jorge Chavez into the region's most modern airport.

Moreover, the technical file details that the control tower will have a height of 65 meters, adding that support buildings will be constructed in an area of 3,100 square meters.

For its part, the second runway has a length of 3,480 meters and will have a network of more than 10 kilometers of new taxiways, approach lights, beaconing systems, air navigation aids, medium voltage systems, as well control and surveillance equipment.
