Peru: Tourists' rights safeguarded in face of suspension of visits to Cusco's Vinicunca

12:11 | Cusco (Cusco region), Nov. 29.

Given the suspension of one of the access (routes) to the Vinicunca Mountain —also known as the "Seven-color Mountain"— personnel from the National Institute for the Defense of Competition and the Protection of Intellectual Property (Indecopi) Regional Office in Cusco began the supervision of tourism agencies in said region to verify whether they offer visits to said tourist attraction and if they inform about the decision made by the communities that manage said zone.

The institution affirmed the objective is to verify that the rights of consumers are not violated, since their expectations would be affected by not being able to reach the "Seven-color Mountain" if they are transported via the suspended road, through the district of Cusipata.

Indecopi stated that, as an authority that defends consumer rights, it urges tourism agencies not to transport domestic and foreign tourists through the Cusipata district until access is restored.

The suspension of access to the colorful Vinicunca Mountain, along the Cusipata-Chillhuani route, was decided on Sunday by the Cusipata District Municipality due to the confrontation between communities in the area that are disputing the management of entrance to this tourist attraction.

In a statement, the Cusipata commune addresses tourism operators and citizens in general about this conflict that dates back to 2019, because the management of tourist services to the Vinicunca Mountain is carried out unilaterally in the communities of Paucarpata, Tintinco, and Chillihuani.
