The city of Tarapoto —located in San Martin region, northeastern Peru— has been experiencing torrential rainfall since 2:00 a.m. on Wednesday, causing flooding in several homes and streets.
One of the hardest-hit areas is the Lagartococha sector, near El Toño Market, located in La Banda de Shilcayo, in San Martin province.
Images shared on social media also show a large amount of water on Tarapoto's Evitamiento Road.
In response to the emergency, the Regional Emergency Operations Center (COER) in San Martin has declared a state of alert, along with the Civil Defense Committee of the Provincial Municipality of San Martin.
