Peru will host the Women’s Pan American Volleyball Cup starting this Monday to decide which teams qualify to the next year’s World Championships in Italy.
The 12th annual tournament will run from June 10-16 and for the first time in the history of the competition, the preliminary phase of the event will take place in three different cities –Iquitos, Huacho and Callao-
Moreover, it is also the first time a country from South America is hosting the annual tournament.
The Organizing Committee of the Women’s Pan American Volleyball Cup and the members of the Control Committee from NORCECA and South American Confederations held a joint meeting on Thursday night to review all the details towards the start of the competition.
Twelve countries will be participating and they have been placed in three round-robin groups, instead of the usual two.
Pool A in Callao consists of Argentina, Puerto Rico, Trinidad & Tobago and United States while Canada, Costa Rica, Cuba and Peru will be playing in Pool B in Iquitos. The teams of Pool C in Huacho are Brazil, Colombia, Dominican Republic and Mexico.
The two group winners with the best ratio will move straight into Saturday night’s semifinals, while the winners of the other group and the three runners-up will be involved in the quarterfinals the night before.
It was reported that the top four NORCECA placed teams and the top two South American teams will get spots in next year’s FIVB World Grand Prix.
The two daily matches in Huacho and Callao will start at 18:00 and 20:00 while in Iquitos, where hosts Peru will be playing at 19:00 and 21:00. The champions will be crowned on Sunday night.
