Peru will gain access to more than 13 million doses of vaccines against COVID-19 through the COVAX Facility mechanism, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported on Saturday.

This is an initiative that seeks to join efforts with vaccine manufacturers so that countries have equitable access to safe vaccines.

Likewise, it seeks to share the risks linked to the development of vaccines by investing in the manufacturing process.

Furthermore, it aims to rely on 2 billion vaccine doses by the end of 2021 in order to distribute them to —at least— 20% of the world population.

By joining the initiative, Peru seeks to benefit from a portfolio of candidate vaccines, which use a range of technology platforms whose research costs exceed its capacities.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that the Peruvian Government on Friday signed the commitment agreement with the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunizations (GAVI), on behalf of the COVAX Facility mechanism.

The agreement was made possible thanks to the leadership of the President of the Republic Martin Vizcarra and the coordinated efforts by the Ministries of Health and Foreign Affairs, as well as the Permanent Representation of Peru to international organizations based in Geneva (Switzerland).
