Peru: Six Lima districts' weekly peaks displace those of first, second COVID-19 waves

The Lima districts of Santiago de Surco, Magdalena, Miraflores, La Molina, San Borja, and San Isidro exceed the number of COVID-19 infections registered in the most critical months of the first and second waves of the pandemic, the Social Health Insurance System (EsSalud) reported on Saturday.

Within this framework, EsSalud's Intelligence and Data Analysis Unit Chief Dante Cersso explained that more than 21,000 new cases were registered during the last week of 2021. This figure represents an increase of 99% over the previous week.
 
According to statistics, in the last week of December, Surco reported 1,137 new cases —a figure higher than the 1,081 new weekly infections detected during the highest peak in 2021 and the 699 cases registered in 2020.

Another district, which exceeded the peak in terms of weekly cases from the first and second waves, was Magdalena del Mar, as it registered 770 infected citizens compared to the 494 and 192 cases it had recorded in 2021 and 2020, respectively.

Miraflores, La Molina, San Borja, and San Isidro also exceeded their peaks during the last two years. The first district registered 693 cases. It had reported 424 in 2020 and 466 the following year.

La Molina registered 610 infected people (388 in 2020 and 465 in 2021).

San Borja saw 484 cases (440 in 2020 and 395 in 2021), whereas San Isidro recorded 397 cases (192 in 2020 and 325 in 2021).

Situation in regions

In Cusco, Arequipa, San Martin, Callao, Ica, Lambayeque, Moquegua, Piura, and Lima the weekly increase is higher than 100%, as reported during the last week of 2021 over the previous one.

The Imperial City registered 480 infections during the last week of 2021 —a figure higher than the 120 infections reported a week before (+300%).

For its part, Arequipa recorded 600 cases —much higher than the amount reported in the previous week: 176 (+241%).

San Martin reported 97 cases compared to 37 (+162%). New infections in Callao went from 341 to 845 (+148%).

Cases in Ica rose from 200 to 479 (+140%), those in Lambayeque climbed from 310 to 705 (+127%).

Moquegua saw an increase from 61 to 136 (+123%). Meanwhile, Piura's cases rose from 418 to 928 (+122%), and those in Lima increased from 6,689 to 13,698 (+105%).

During the last seven weeks of 2021, more than 240 deaths from COVID-19 were registered every week, while in the latter week the number of deaths rose by 12% over the previous one.
