Peru has signed two Inter-American Conventions against racism and discrimination in a ceremony held on Tuesday at Organization of American States (OAS) Headquarters.
Peruvian Ambassador to OAS Ana Rosa Valdivieso said the protection and defense of human rights are a "priority" for the Andean country.
"The fight against discrimination and the protection of the most vulnerable populations are unescapable commitments of our States," she assured.
"That's why it is a special pleasure to have the opportunity to sign, on behalf of Peru, the Inter-American Convention against Racism, Racial Discrimination and Related Intolerance, and the Inter-American Convention against All Forms of Discrimination and Intolerance," she added.
OAS Secretary-General Luis Almagro celebrated the signing and Peru's position on the issue.
"The signing of the two Inter-American Conventions by Peru is a demonstration of its commitment to fight racism, discrimination and intolerance. Peru has a legal framework in favor of equality and non-discrimination towards its citizens," he said.
Almagro also called on countries, which have not yet joined the initiatives, to sign the documents.
