Peru keeps its commitment in support of peace by sending 216 members of the Peruvian Armed Forces to provide humanitarian aid in Haiti, Peru's Defense Minister Pedro Cateriano said Monday.
The so-called Blue Berets will leave the country for a six-month peacekeeping mission.

"Haiti is a country that still requires international assistance to reach national order, thus Peruvian Blue Berets will be helping bring peace there," said Cateriano, who chaired the farewell ceremony Monday morning.

He recalled that the representative of the United Nations Secretary-General said that they were very grateful for the performance being made by members of the Peruvian Armed Forces.

The Central American country has been facing the consequences of a devastating earthquake that hit in January 2010.
