Retail sector sales expanded 6.1% in January 2019 compared to the same month last year, Production Minister Rocio Barrios has informed.
In this sense, sales exceeded S/3.1 billion (over US$ 939 million) underpinned by the positive results of department stores, supermarkets, drugstores, pharmacies, as well as hardware and household appliance stores.
"
Retail trade in the
retail sector is increasing strongly, and it is key since it employs over 108,000 Peruvians, 52% of whom are women. These figures show a greater independent and formal insertion of women in the country's business network," the official expressed.
Per sub-sectors
The department store and supermarket sub-sector managed to advance 6.1%, driven by higher sales of beverages and tobacco (14.6%), pharmaceutical products and cosmetics (12.6%), food (7.9%), clothing and footwear (3.9%), plus household goods (0.4%).
On the other hand, the hardware and household appliances activity grew 4.2% due to an increase in sales of hardware and paints (10.1%), furniture (5.6%), as well as household articles (2.6%).
Finally, the drugstore and pharmacy activity increased 9.6%, fueled by higher sales of pharmaceutical and medicinal products (13.4%).
