Peru remembers Alianza Lima air tragedy

13:47 | Lima, Dec. 8.

Although today marks 29 years of the major tragedy that put the Peruvian soccer into mourning, the pain is still felt by Alianza Lima team’s entourage.

Occurred on December 8th, 1987, this terrible event took the life of 43 people, including players, technical staff, cheerleaders and crew members.

On that occasion, the people’s team was returning to Peru’s capital city of Lima following his last victory in a league match held in the Eastern city of Pucallpa.

However, the Fokker F27 aircraft carrying the soccer stars suddenly plunged into the Pacific Ocean a few miles short of its destination.

Thus, this sad day will never be forgotten since an excellent generation disappeared from national sports history.

It must be noted that some of the blue-white team’s players did not get to board the said aircraft for various reasons.

Since that fatal day, the Alianza Lima national club pays tribute to its fallen members by organizing a series of activities and a memorial mass.
