Foreign Affairs Ministry summoned the Chargé d'Affaires of the Venezuelan Embassy in Peru to inform him the Peruvian Government does not recognize the illegitimate elections held in the neighboring country on May 20.
This measure was taken in accordance with the
Lima Group declaration.
The ministry regretted that Venezuela has held said elections in spite of the repeated calls —made by the international community— to suspend and replace them with a democratic, free, fair, and
transparent electoral process, in line with international standards.
Furthermore, the Venezuelan representative was informed about the Peruvian Government's deep concern regarding the worsening of the political, economic, social, and
humanitarian crisis in the Bolivarian country.
This situation has forced thousands of Venezuelan citizens to flee their homeland, thus resulting in a
mass exodus, the communiqué noted.
As is known, the Peruvian Government expelled the Venezuelan Ambassador in August 2017, reducing the diplomatic representation of this nation to Chargé d'Affaires.
Finally, the Inca country reaffirms its firm commitment to continue contributing to the restoration of democracy in Venezuela.
