Peru: Red Cross rescuers to join search for Italian tourist in Cusco region

10:46 | Urubamba (Cusco region), Jul. 13.

Volunteer rescuers from the Cusco-based Red Cross will join search efforts undertaken by the National Police of Peru for Italian tourist Alberto Fedele, 30, who went missing on the slopes of Chicon Mountain located in Urubamba province.

Red Cross Volunteer Coordinator Eddy Bustamante reported that there are 12 specialized and experienced rescuers ready to travel to the Sacred Valley of the Incas and thus start the search for said tourist in rugged areas.

"We are (engaged) in conversations with the relatives (…). We know that it is a rugged area and cars can only reach up to a certain part," Bustamante said.

The deployment of volunteers would be a matter of hours and their stay under the Chicon would last several days.

"We have the necessary equipment and capacity supported by rescuers with 30 years of experience. We already did so (rescue efforts) in the search for Nataly Salazar and during Coastal El Niño phenomenon in the north of the country," he added.

The Red Cross will join High Mountain Rescue Unit (Usam) agents, firefighters, and volunteers who have been in constant search since July 6 when citizen Lisa Abregu Arroyo, 39, filed a missing person report at the police station in Urubamba.

The Italian tourist is missing after he started to walk towards San Isidro Chicon community and then to the Juchuycocha Lake, located at the foot of Chicon Mountain.

Despite the efforts undertaken for one week, the foreigner has not been found at the moment.
