A Moche necklace—part of Peru's cultural heritage—was formally handed over to the Peruvian Embassy in Italy on July 9.
Featuring nine ancient "piruros" and circular motifs, the artifact had been seized in the city of Udine.
The recovery, carried out by the Udine Unit of Italy's Carabinieri Command for the Protection of Cultural Heritage (CCTPC), is the result of an investigation into illegally extracted cultural property.
At the restitution ceremony, the Peruvian Embassy highlighted the necklace's great cultural value and excellent state of preservation.
The event also underscored the strong and effective cooperation between Peru and Italy in the protection and recovery of cultural heritage.
Thanks to this collaboration, 58 Peruvian cultural artifacts have been recovered over the past two years.
A crucial partnership
Within the framework of the 150th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Peru and Italy in 2024, the Peruvian Embassy reaffirmed the South American country's commitment to further strengthening this crucial bilateral partnership.
These fruitful cooperation ties will allow Peru to recover another 80 archaeological artifacts belonging to its national heritage in the coming months, which are currently in the restitution process.
