Between December 2022 and January 2023, the Public Ministry opened 8 prosecutorial investigations into the deaths that occurred at the latest demonstrations held in Peru.

Said investigations will serve to determine those responsible for the loss of human lives.

Similarly, there are 17 prosecutorial files for injured citizens; 80 to investigate those who allegedly committed: crimes against public administration, riots, violence, resistance to authority, and hindered public services operations; as well as 3 prosecutorial files on the attacks on Public Ministry offices.

In total, 11 preliminary investigations were initiated against those to be found responsible for the acts of violence which occurred in the following regions: Puno, Cusco, Arequipa, Apurimac, Ucayali, and Lima.

According to the initial investigations carried out by criminal, crime prevention, and organized crime prosecutors, it was learned that, as a result of the clashes which occurred during the protests, there are 42 deaths (41 civilians and 1 police agent); as well as 531 injured —of whom 355 are civilians and 176 are National Police agents.

The arrest of 329 citizens has also been registered, including that of a minor. They are being investigated for alleged crimes against public administration, riots, violence, resistance to authority, and hindering public service operations.

"This way, the Public Ministry guarantees that the investigations are carried out with strict respect for the laws that govern the country and the defense of human rights with order, firmness, and promptness," the institution said.

The Public Ministry is an autonomous body of the Peruvian State.
