Peru: Prosecutor's Office requests pre-trial detention of terrorist Comrade Carlos

18:00 | Huanuco (Huanuco region), Jun. 29.

The Huanuco Supraprovincial Prosecutor's Office Specialized in Terrorism requested the 18-month pre-trial detention of Carlos Zolier Zuñiga —also known as "Comrade Carlos"— for the alleged crime of terrorism, the Public Ministry reported on Thursday.

The person under investigation was captured on June 14 during an operation in the Valley of Apurimac, Ene, and Mantaro Rivers (Vraem).

According to the prosecutor's thesis, "Comrade Carlos" would be one of the perpetrators of the Vizcatan del Ene massacre, which occurred on May 23, 2021, and caused the death of 16 people, including two minors.

On June 14, law enforcement agents captured in Huanta (Ayacucho region) the narco-terrorist known as "Comrade Carlos" —a commander of the so-called Militarizado Partido Comunista del Peru (Militarized Communist Party of Peru - MPCP). It is a faction of terrorist group Sendero Luminoso (Shining Path) and operates in the Vraem.

He is accused of being perpetrator of the murders of several police members, ex-Counterterrorism Directorate (Dircote) Chief Jose Baella confirmed.

Baella indicated that "Comrade Carlos" knows all the handling of Victor Quispe Palomino —also known as "Comrade Jose"— concerning terrorist support groups and the possible attacks that might occur.

According to police information, since his childhood Zolier Zuñiga was raised inside the terrorist armies led by "Comrade Alipio."

"Comrade Carlos" was part of the group known as "Pioneritos" (Little Pioneers) made up of children recruited and trained under the ideology of the Shining Path terrorist group.
