Foreign Affairs Minister Elmer Schialer held a meeting with Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Secretary-General Kao Kim Hourn.

During this event, the government official reaffirmed Peru's commitment to further strengthening ties with all partners in the Asia-Pacific region, particularly with the members of that organization.

Within the framework of the OECD Ministerial Council Meeting held in Paris, Minister Schialer emphasized that Peru maintains a position of "active neutrality," aimed at fostering good relations with all its partners in a constructive manner.

Similarly, he reaffirmed the importance that Peru places on dialogue between Latin America and Southeast Asia, as well as the country's willingness to explore various cooperation mechanisms, such as participation in forums or initiatives aimed at fostering closer ties between ASEAN and Latin America.

In that regard, an invitation was extended to the Secretary-General to pay an official visit to Peru —an opportunity to cooperate on economic growth and regional integration, taking into account Peru's status as a Development Partner of ASEAN.

Likewise, the Secretary-General invited Peru to join the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), an agreement involving the 10 ASEAN member states and five countries from Asia and Oceania with which they have existing free trade agreements.

Partner

On January 29, 2024, Peru was granted the status of Development Partner by ASEAN.

This designation makes Peru a cooperating state of the Southeast Asian bloc, thus marking the beginning of a new stage in their relationship.

ASEAN is a regional grouping of 10 Southeast Asian states whose objective is to promote economic and security cooperation among its members.

It is made up of Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Laos, and Myanmar.
