Peru President: We need to achieve sustainable development with social equity

13:37 | Lima, Nov. 5.

The aim of achieving sustainable development must go hand-in-hand with a social vision, poverty reduction, the fight against corruption, and the strengthening of citizenship, Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra affirmed on Tuesday.

During the opening of the 30th Annual Seminar of the Consortium for Economic and Social Research (CIES 2019), and a tribute to the 75 years of relations between Canada and Peru, the Head of State said the Inca country's economic growth has to be sustainable in order to be effective.

"Achieving development means growing, growing economically, in an equitable and inclusive manner, with a social approach, and closing gaps. We have to think about the country as a single territory, where citizens are valued regardless of their culture, geographical location, creed, or social condition," he remarked.

President Vizcarra said that the neighboring countries' situation shows that economic growth is not enough, since there is a need to have a wider vision of development with a clear focus on inequality reduction.

Peru's top official explained that achieving sustainable development also implies combating the scourge of corruption, which enables us to be a country with values, integrity, and one that strengthens its institutions.

"If we do not strike a balance between all these concepts, economic growth-based development will be momentary. It can be compromised as easy as it was achieved," the statesman explained.

"Everybody (citizens and authorities) is aware that we must make an effort to achieve sustainability and development in the country," he added.
