The President of the Republic Pedro Castillo on Saturday participated in the delivery of 180 tons of guano collected from Peruvian shore islands to family farming communities in the Chancay-Huaral Valley, as part of the Second Agrarian Reform.

More than 6,000 farmers associated with the Board of Users of the Chancay–Huaral Hydraulic Sector, as well as 225 families, will directly and indirectly benefit from the use of guano collected from the islands promoted by the government so as to counteract the international rise in the price of fertilizers such as urea, which is mainly imported from Russia and China.

The ceremony took place at Julio Flores Colan stadium in Huaral, and featured Huaral Province Mayor Jaime Uribe Ochoa, as well as Julio Melgarejo Oropeza, who chairs the Commission of the Board of Users of the Chancay-Huaral Hydraulic Sector.

Also attending were Foreign Trade-Tourism Minister Roberto Sanchez, Agrarian Development-Irrigation Minister Javier Arce, and the Executive Director of the Rural Agricultural Productive Development Program (Agro Rural) Rogelio Huamani.

The schedule for the delivery of guano collected from the islands is set by the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation through the Rural Agricultural Productive Development Program (Agro Rural).

A total of 102,000 tons of guano (52,000 tons of nitrogenous guano and 50,000 tons of phosphate guano) are expected to be extracted from Peruvian shore islands this year.

Said extraction will benefit 150,000 family farming households.

The guano harvested from 22 islands and 8 guano points —which are administered by Agro Rural on the Peruvian coast— is considered a powerful and unique natural fertilizer that helps produce higher yield per hectare in agriculture.

The collection of this fertilizer is undertaken by Agro Rural's Sub-Unit of Extraction and Commercialization of Fertilizers.
