The President of the Republic Pedro Castillo participated in the ceremony for the 198th anniversary of the Battle of Junin, which took place in the Historic Sanctuary of Chacamarca on Saturday.

On this occasion, the Head of State was joined by Cabinet Chief Anibal Torres, as well as Ministers Jose Luis Gavidia (Defense), Willy Huerta (Interior), and Jorge Lopez (Health).

The event was also attended by Junin Mayor Jorge Luis Tejeda, Regional Governor Fernando Orihuela, and representatives of the Armed Forces.

Commemoration

Today marks the 198th anniversary of the famous Battle of Junin —the first great victory of the patriotic army led by Liberator Simon Bolivar and whose triumph was crucial for consolidating the Independence of Peru and South America.

This battle was fought on August 6, 1824, on the cold Pampa de Junin or Bombon Plateau and in the vicinity of Lake Chinchaycocha, located at 4,100 meters above sea level.

There, the Liberating Army led by General Simon Bolivar faced the Royalist Army commanded by Spanish General Jose de Canterac.

This momentous victory prompted the Liberator to change the name of the triumphant cavalry regiment Húsares del Perú (Hussars of Peru) to Húsares de Junín (Hussars of Junin).

In the same way, it also originated the creation of the Day of Peruvian Cavalry, in memory of such a memorable victory.
