Peru President oversees emergency response actions in Cusco

10:57 | Santa Teresa (Cusco region), Mar. 2.

Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra visited Santa Teresa district, where he coordinated multisectoral actions to provide humanitarian aid and assist the victims of the massive landslide that left several people missing in said area located in La Convencion province (Cusco region).

"We are here to monitor the situation. I pledged to come back, and here we are, making decisions along with local authorities, as well as meeting access and health needs of the population. We do not stay in office, we go directly to the affected area," he said Sunday in his speech to the people of Santa Teresa.

The Peruvian leader explained that Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister Edgard Vasquez arrived in the area right after the emergency —triggered by the massive landslide from Salcantay peak— in order to coordinate the actions in support of victims.

Likewise, he affirmed that, as soon as the emergency arose, he tried to reach the abovementioned town in Cusco, but weather conditions prevented him from doing it.

However, the commitment was to come and determine the magnitude of the emergency. Finally, on Sunday, he managed to reach the population and local authorities.

In a gathering with locals, the Head of State said that he would give priority to connectivity, announcing the construction of a road to link Santa Maria and Santa Teresa districts, both situated in Cusco region.

Additionally, he noted that humanitarian aid has been delivered to the victims in Cusco, an initiative that is being replied in other regions like Arequipa and Tacna so as to meet —as a matter of urgency— the needs of the inhabitants affected by heavy rains in southern Peru.
