The new President of the Republic Manuel Merino de Lama called for the unity of all Peruvians upon taking office in Lima on Tuesday.

"Let me finally call for unity. We must end the confrontation and make a turn with respect to the relationship between the Executive and Legislative Branches that unfortunately has not been appropriate in recent years," he said during his inauguration address to the nation.

Likewise, the Head of State called for calm and tranquility and pointed out that the country cannot be divided at this time.

Merino de Lama recognized the technical and professional contribution from high-ranking State officials and said he hopes for that continuity.

He reiterated his commitment to leading a democratic transition and stressed that he had come from the political party Accion Popular (Popular Action).

The new president thanked the support of Congress' Board members, Parliament's 9 parties, and 130 legislators. He also said that there were no negotiations under the table or purchase of votes for the recent removal of now-former President Martin Vizcarra from office.
