President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski on Wednesday afternoon presided over a ceremony marking BAP Carrasco ship's incorporation into the Peruvian Navy.

It must be noted the construction of said vessel took place during President Ollanta Humala's administration (2011-2016).

In this context, the Head of State congratulated the former government for the work done.

Likewise, the 78-year-old noted BAP Carrasco will contribute to scientific research.

"I'm sure this ship will travel to Antarctica," the statesman expressed.

"But we have to preserve our ocean; at current times, characterized by great changes and the depredation [of nature], it is essential to count on the scientific weapon in order to protect ourselves," he added.

The ship is fitted with water and seabed sampling equipment, as well as several sensors and instruments needed for oceanographic studies.

Said event took place at Callao Naval Base. The Head of State was joined by Defense Minister Jorge Nieto, as well as high-ranking military officials.
