The President of the Republic, Jose Jeri,, on Wednesday proposed reviewing the repeal of the current National Citizen Security Plan, considering it "far from reality and of no practical use."

"We have a current National Citizen Security Plan that, in my view, is desk-based and far from reality; in practice, it is of no use to us. (...) Evaluate the repeal of that plan currently in force," he stated.

The top official recalled that he had made this criticism a few months ago and is reiterating it today.

"That is why, Mr. Minister, we must stop having desk-based plans and start having plans that truly respond to today's reality, with a vision for the future," he expressed.

The Head of State made these remarks during the ceremony for logistical equipment delivery to strengthen the Peruvian National Police (PNP) operational capacity. It included bulletproof vests, rifles, and garment.

This event was also attended by the Ministers Vicente Tiburcio (Interior) and Cesar Quispe (Production), as well as PNP General Commander Oscar Arriola.

In his address, the President highlighted that the citizen security plans of 2013 and 2018 helped reduce the rates of perception, crime, and victimization.

"Plans such as those of 2013 and 2018 had a different logic; they were much more operational and based on the reality principle," Jeri stated.

"Although it is true that they are old plans that are no longer in force, we must uphold the spirit that once served its purpose," he added.

At another point, the Head of State thanked the PNP for its efforts to help provide peace of mind to the population.

"We are eternally grateful for that effort. Just as today we have received donations and equipment, we can continue contributing to strengthening our police. With the resources we will have at our disposal —which are scarce— we will continue acquiring the necessary tools with a sense of urgency for our police," he said.

The top official stated that this measure will be announced in the coming days so that, within the framework of the state of emergency, it will be possible to act swiftly, as well as enhance police intervention and actions.

"This must be announced in the coming days with a sense of urgency and promptness," he underlined.

In turn, Interior Minister Vicente Tiburcio indicated that among the equipment delivered to the PNP are 2,282 assault rifles, out of a total of 7,323 units.

Additionally, more than 4,000 bulletproof vests donated by China and over 130,000 garments produced by micro and small entrepreneurs under the Compras a MYPErú Program (a State-run initiative supporting purchases from micro and small enterprises) were delivered.
