The president of the Republic, Martin Vizcarra, on Thursday affirmed that the Government will give full support to the wounded citizens and relatives of the victims of a gas truck explosion occurred in Lima's peripheral Villa El Salvador district earlier today —an event he described as a "tragedy."

"It is very unfortunate because of the magnitude and consequences. We can describe it as a tragedy, and we lament it. Our sympathy is with the affected people and their families. The least we can do is to give them our full support," he expressed.

From northern La Libertad region, the Head of State said authorities from the Health Ministry, National Civil Defense Institute (Indeci), National Police, and Armed Forces are in the area. In fact, the Air Force has deployed a helicopter for the transfer of the injured people to hospitals.

The top official reported that —the fatal explosion— initially led to the death of one citizen. Afterwards, a girl died while she was being treated at the hospital, as a result of her injuries.

Investigation

The President also affirmed that the causes —for the deflagration of the LPG tanker truck— will be investigated in order to establish responsibilities.

"That, on the one hand; on the other, we need to give full support to the injured people and the relatives of the victims," he reiterated.

The truck explosion left at least 50 citizens injured and set at least 8 homes on fire in Villa El Salvador district.
