Peru President enacts law to regulate plastic use

17:59 | Lima, Dec. 18.

President Martin Vizcarra on Tuesday enacted the bill regulating non-reusable plastic.

In this sense, the law establishes the regulatory framework to promote the sustainable consumption and production of plastic in the Inca country.

On December 5, Congress approved this bill with 96 votes in favor.

This legislative initiative sets deadlines for the regulation and prohibition of the use, delivery, fabrication, as well as distribution of plastic bags, straws, containers, and utensils made of polyethylene and expanded polystyrene (EPS).

After its entry into force, it will be forbidden to provide plastic bags for printed publicity, newspapers, magazines, receipts, and all information directed to consumers.

Likewise, bags of less than 30 cm on the side and straws will be banned a year after the law's approval.

Furthermore, within a maximum period of three years, businesses and supermarkets must have completely replaced non-reusable plastic bags with environmentally friendly ones

The ceremony took place at the Government Palace.

On the occasion, President Vizcarra was joined by Vice-President Mercedes Araoz, Prime Minister Cesar Villanueva, as well as Ministers Fabiola Muñoz (Environment) and Vicente Zeballos (Justice and Human Rights).
