About 300,000 tests to detect the coronavirus have been taken so far, the President of the Republic Martin Vizcarra affirmed on Wednesday afternoon.
In this sense, the top official stressed that the samples taken in Peru exceed those of neighboring countries such as Chile (166,000), Colombia (90,000), Argentina (53,000), or Ecuador (48,000).
"It would have been easy to maintain the same trend of tests and now (...) we would have a number of positive cases that would not be the real one. We want to have accurate, true, and transparent information in order to make the best decisions," he expressed.
Likewise, the statesman mentioned that the test curve to diagnose the coronavirus was almost flat until April 8 when the diagnoses increased.
Therefore, the figures —per each one million citizens— currently indicate that 7,266 tests have been conducted, followed by 946 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 26 deaths per each one million citizens.
Mr. Vizcarra also reported that there are 3.2 million infected by COVID-19 worldwide, with 220,000 people dead leading to a mortality rate of 7%. However, he stressed that such percentage stands at 2.74% in Peru.
"We are in the most difficult stage of the disease, but we have managed to lower the indicators significantly (...) be assured that we are on the right track," he concluded.
