Within the framework of the 161st anniversary of the creation of the General Corps of Volunteer Firefighters of Peru (CGBVP), the President of the Republic Pedro Castillo on Sunday delivered 38 vehicles for emergency care to the institution and pledged to improve its response capacity.

"I urge Interior Minister Avelino Guillen to collect the demands of the fire department as soon as possible because that's what we're here for, to serve Peru, its organizations and institutions," he said at a ceremony held at the Government Palace in Lima.

Mr. Castillo stated that 18 tanker trucks are being delivered, five of which have a capacity of 5,000 gallons of water and other 13 a capacity of 1,500 gallons of water.

In addition, he said the Government is providing 20 double cab fire vehicles that are fully equipped to perform rescue operations.

"These vehicles strengthen their emergency service and are the result of the endeavor of the State to support the brave volunteer firefighters, who each year respond to more than 120,000 emergencies of all kinds: fires, natural disasters, vehicle accidents, medical emergencies, among others," he remarked.

At present, the CGBVP has 1,300 emergency vehicles nationwide, including ambulances, fire trucks, rescue vehicles, tanks, as well as telescopic and auxiliary ladders.

In this sense, the Head of State noted that it is important for the country to renew the fire department's vehicle fleet, since the logistical conditions under which they work are not right, as most of the vehicles are several years old and some are in terrible condition.

"Firefighters have been present in all circumstances and times of adversity that our country has been through. They were present to put out fires and rescue people. In addition, they helped affected families after earthquakes; in short, they are present every time the country needs them," he emphasized.
