President Martin Vizcarra said there is no reason to celebrate the
International Women's Day; instead, he called on reflection after 29 femicide cases have been reported in the country so far this year.
"Today is March 8, Women's Day, and the first thought that comes to mind is: What should we do? Should we celebrate? Is it appropriate to do so?" the Peruvian leader expressed.
"It is the 67th day of the year, and we started the day with the news that the 29th
femicide case of the year was perpetrated today. Are we going to celebrate or should we reflect on the situation?" he added.
For instance —he continued— there is no representation of women at the regional level, and only seven out of 196 provincial mayors are female.
"There is no reason to celebrate. Instead, we should reflect on it," he emphasized.
Vizcarra expressed appreciation to San Juan de Miraflores' mayoress and reiterated his commitment to supporting her administration.
