The President of the Republic Dina Boluarte on Wednesday welcomed the introduction of 5,190 new police agents into patrolling and citizen security works.

During a ceremony held at the Interior Ministry headquarters in Lima, Mrs. Boluarte indicated that it is part of her administration's objective of prioritizing both citizen security and the economic aspect during 2024.

"We begin the year by redoubling our efforts to fight delinquency and criminality," she said in her speech.

The Head of State specified that of the 5,190 police agents who will be in charge of patrolling and ensuring citizen security, 3,678 will be assigned to various cities, while approximately another 1,500 will be stationed in Lima and Callao.

"They will be deployed to the districts that register the highest crime incidence," she added.

These are Peruvian National Police members who have recently graduated from said institution's training schools. They will join the 40,000 agents who have been dedicating themselves to the aforementioned tasks, Mrs. Boluarte announced.

Likewise, they begin to expand the universe of 130,000 police agents who perform duties nationwide.

The top official also said that these agents are specialists in terms of investigation and public order.

This specialization is "in accordance with the Government's citizen security policy objectives," she added.

Higher budget allocation

In this sense, the president underscored that the budget corresponding to patrol activities has been increased by S/136 million (about US$36.70 million) for the current year.

Similarly, Mrs. Boluarte noted that the allocation of financial resources for the fight against crime has been raised to more than S/5 billion (over US$1.357 billion).
