The President of the Republic Dina Boluarte on Friday participated in the ceremony for the 144th anniversary of the Battle of Arica and Renewal of the Oath of Allegiance to the Flag.

This event saw the presence of Defense Minister Walter Astudillo and Joint Command of the Armed Forces Chief, Army General David Ojeda.

It was also attended by General Commanders: Admiral Luis Jose Polar Figari (Navy), General Carlos Enrique Chavez Cateriano (Air Force), and General Cesar Briceño Valdivia (Army).

This event took place at Bolognesi Roundabout in the Peruvian capital, Lima.

Battle of Arica

The Battle of Arica, which ended up in the takeover of the city by Chilean troops, took place on June 7, 1880 —within the framework of the Pacific War.
During the battle, Eighth Division Chief Alfonso Ugarte decided to throw himself off Morro de Arica (Hill of Arica) in order to prevent the enemies from capturing the national flag.

In commemoration of the courage and honor with which Peruvian troops defended the national banner, Flag Day is commemorated every June 7.
