The President of the Republic Dina Boluarte on Wednesday participated in the ceremony marking the 143rd anniversary of the Battle of Arica and the Renewal of the Oath of Allegiance to the Flag.

This event took place at Plaza de la Bandera (Flag Roundabout) in Lima's Pueblo Libre district.

As is known, this commemoration is held every June 7 with the presence of civil and military authorities.

Battle of Arica

The Battle of Arica, which ended up in the capture of the city by Chilean troops, took place on June 7, 1880 —within the framework of the Pacific War.

Once Alfonso Ugarte, head of the Eighth Division, had seen his army cornered by the counterpart, he decided to jump off the Morro de Arica (Arica Hill) to prevent the National Flag from being captured by rivals.

In commemoration of the courage and honor with which Peruvian soldiers defended the country against the attack, even by giving their own lives before seeing the national flag in the hands of the neighboring country, this national symbol is celebrated on the aforementioned date.
