Peru President asks Congress to approve political reform bills

15:01 | Lima, Jul. 3.

The President of the Republic Martin Vizcarra on Friday asked Congress to approve the political reform bills before the end of the ordinary legislature this month.

Within this framework, the Head of State requested Congress members to work in a coordinated manner with the Executive Branch.

"I ask you, once again in the most respectful way, to please approve —before the current legislature comes to an end— the political reform bills that required two-time voting, so that they can be in force for next year's elections, in 2021," he expressed.

In this sense, the top official explained that one of the important issues —which must be addressed at Parliament— is gender parity, so that women may have a greater number in the political representation.

"Another issue that is fundamental is the regulation which prohibits those sentenced in first instance verdicts —for intentional crimes— from participating in elections for public office. That has been requested by the people and approved in the previous legislature, via referendum; please, ratify this will of the people because that is what we all expect from this Congress before the end of the legislature," he said.

The statesman added that in the case of parity there were doubts at the beginning. However, it was approved by the Constitution Commission.

Thus, Mr. Vizcarra asked —with the respect that Congress deserves— "that it be approved before the end of the July legislature."
