Peru: President announces massive use of natural gas nationwide

13:49 | Ayacucho (Ayacucho region), Nov. 10.

The President of the Republic Pedro Castillo on Wednesday reported that his administration has begun the process of renegotiating the natural gas contract with the Camisea Consortium, which will be conducted in compliance with current legislation.

"We have started the process of renegotiating the gas contract with the Camisea Consortium, but I reiterate that all conversations will be held within the current legal and constitutional framework," Mr. Castillo expressed.

"(...) We will have an open and transparent dialogue with the company because we believe that all Peruvians should benefit from the Camisea gas, because we are entitled to it," he added.

The Head of State said it is not possible that citizens of Ayacucho and other southern regions do not benefit directly from Camisea natural gas and —instead— pay high fees for domestic gas.

"How is it possible that our population in the southern area of the country continues to wait for years for the promise of access to natural gas? Natural gas belongs to all Peruvians; therefore, I have come to announce that I have made a firm decision to make natural gas massive across Peru," Mr. Castillo stated.

"Today we begin bringing gas to regions of Cusco, Puno, Apurimac, Arequipa, Ayacucho, Moquegua, Tacna, Ucayali, as well as other regions," he added.

The top official also reported that the Government has submitted a bill for the massive use of natural gas before Congress of the Republic.

"From here, I urge you to pass it immediately. The new policy on massive use of natural gas will allow us to recover this energy resource for all Peruvians (…)," he said.

Remarks were made during an event held at the Main Square of the city of Ayacucho, in which the Head of State presented a report on the first 100 days of Government.
