The Government of Peru has presented its Second
Biennial Update Report (BUR) to fulfill its commitments and obligations under the
United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
The
Ministry of Environment —the country's environmental authority and entity responsible for implementing the international environmental agreements— prepared this report.
The process of preparation has been conducted through an exhaustive review of information available at different governmental and civil society agencies.
BURs are reports to be submitted by non-Annex I Parties —mostly developing countries— containing updates of national Greenhouse Gas (GHG) inventories, including a national inventory report and information on mitigation actions, needs, and support received.
Such reports provide updates on actions undertaken by a Party to implement the Convention, including the status of its GHG emissions and removals by sinks, as well as on the actions to reduce emissions or enhance sinks.
The BUR submitted by Peru contains information on national circumstances and institutional arrangements, the 2014 National Greenhouse Gases Inventory (INGEI), and updates of 2012, 2010, 2005, and 2000 inventories.
This report also contains information on mitigation actions, needs and support received to prepare and submit the second BUR.
According to the Biennial Update Report, the 2014 INGEI indicates that Peru's total emissions amount to 167 629,8 Gg CO2 EQ, of which 44.9% corresponds to the
Land Use, Land-Use Change and Forestry (LULUCF) sector, and 30% to the energy sector —responsible for most emissions in the country.
