Peru: Pomac Forest expects over 20,000 tourists this year

08:00 | Chiclayo (Lambayeque region), Jan. 25.

The Pomac Forest Historical Sanctuary, in northern Peru's Lambayeque region, is expected to receive more than 20,000 domestic and international visitors this year, projected Antonio Gamonal, head of the protected natural area.

The sanctuary welcomed 15,500 tourists in 2017, which was below the target set of 20,000, bearing in mind the 22,000 visits registered in 2016.

"The Coastal El Niño phenomenon, the entrances damaged by rains, and the delay in restoring them resulted in a decline of tourist flow," he commented.

Gamonal told Andina news agency that more than 20,000 vacationers are expected to come this year, like in 2017.

"Indoor activities will be promoted at the sanctuary, with the support of various organizations. Adventure tourism will be encouraged so that more people take part in cycle races, walks […]," he pointed out.

The sanctuary's head explained that 90% of visitors are Peruvians, while the rest are foreigners from the United States, Germany, France, and Spain.

"They [foreigners] opt for the trekking tour to experience the protected natural area. They come with that in mind. Nationals prefer to be transported and try to visit several sites on a single day," he revealed.
