Peru PM: We'll do everything we can to decentralize the country

16:28 | Chimbote (Ancash region), Jun. 29.

Peru's Prime Minister Cesar Villanueva claimed the administration of President Martin Vizcarra will make every effort to decentralize the country through major investments.

"We'll strive to decentralize the nation. We'll do everything we can to have a decentralized country, with investments that are not 100% dependent on MEF (Economy and Finance Ministry), rather than new regulations," he noted.

Speaking at the closure of the Muni-Executive Power meeting, Villanueva said Ancash is a region of contrasts as it is home to the greatest mineral wealth in the country and the largest royalty recipient, but faces an unequal distribution (of wealth).

According to the government official, this visit let him assess sectoral and construction projects, ensure better coordination, and reconsider decentralization.

"Transfer Chinecas project to the Central Government —people say— but that's the opposite of what we want: fiscal decentralization," the Cabinet chief added.

The Government has allocated S/421 million (about US$128.5 million) to Ancash region this year, involving resources for municipalities, the regional government, as well as those allocated to ministries, which are invested in strategic sectors.

This budget is used in sectors like agriculture, health, and transport.

The Muni-Executive Power meeting comprised more than 50 working sessions between mayors and ministerial officials.
