Peru PM: Talks with political parties seek to set early elections proposal on path

14:01 | Lima, Aug. 5.

Prime Minister Salvador del Solar affirmed the dialogue with Congress' political groups seeks to set the constitutional reform proposal —aimed at calling for early general elections by 2020, instead of 2021— on path.

"We have initiated a round of dialogue session, which will continue tomorrow to put the cards on the table and see if we are able to assume there is strong distrust between the Legislative and the Executive branches. We must listen to each other," the high-ranking official told Cuarto Poder TV show.

"The important thing is to move the bill forward," he expressed.

In this sense, the cabinet chief held a meeting with parties Bancada Liberal and Fuerza Popular to address the matter on Monday morning.

Before that, Del Solar met with Peruanos por el Kambio, Accion, Popular, Nuevo Peru, and Alianza para el Progreso.

Peru's Prime Minister affirmed the proposal does not seek confrontation, nor is it a measure against Congress.

"This is a joint, mutual way out. What if we all leave? If we prepare a one-year orderly transition (…) we can even include the progress in the political reform process and even more," the Prime Minister added.
