Peru PM reaffirms commitment to native communities

12:24 | Atalaya (Ucayali region), Aug. 29.

Peruvian Prime Minister Cesar Villanueva reaffirmed the Government's commitment to supporting Atalaya province development and listening to its citizens' demands.

"We have to work together and untangle the bureaucratic web to resolve the Amazonia's problems," the official indicated during his meeting with representatives of the province's indigenous organizations.

According to Villanueva, the region's issues cannot be solved overnight as they are the result of a long-standing centralism.

To counter this, President Martin Vizcarra's administration is characterized by visits to the country's inland areas on a regular basis.

He went on to add that —even though 60% of the national territory is rainforest— it had been considered a secondary part of the nation.

"(…) This is why our development has been delayed, but now we must catch up," the Prime Minister affirmed.

Villanueva traveled to Atalaya on Wednesday along with Ministers Gustavo Mostajo (Agriculture and Irrigation), Fabiola Muñoz (Environment), and Patricia Balbuena (Culture).
