Peru PM: Gov't measures give priority to health of Peruvians

09:59 | Lima, Jun. 19.

The measures adopted by the Government within the framework of the state of national emergency declared to contain the spread of the novel (COVID-19) coronavirus give priority to the health of all Peruvians, Prime Minister Vicente Zeballos affirmed on Friday.

Zeballos made his remarks before embarking on a trip to the Amazonian regions of San Martin and Loreto.

The President of the Council of Ministers stated that every action —such as the mandatory social immobilization (curfew) running from 9:00 p.m. and 4:00 a.m. across the country as provided in a Supreme Decree published today El Peruano official gazette— is based on medical and scientific reports.

"All our decisions are made based on medical and scientific reports provided by the Ministry of Health. This last extension (of the state of emergency) will be in effect until June 30, and there are still two weeks to go. We cannot give an advance opinion on the decision we will make, but the decisions are sustained on medical-scientific determinations and place emphasis on the health of all Peruvians," he stated.

In this sense, the Cabinet chief noted that the decree approving the reopening of shopping centers and conglomerates sets out various restrictions on access to these establishments, such as reopening at 50% capacity, allowing only one person to go shopping, and banning children.

"Letting these establishments reopen does not mean that health considerations will be set aside; in any case, they must run in parallel," he added.
