Peru is participating in the 12th Ministerial Conference of the World Trade Organization (WTO), which takes place in the city of Geneva, Switzerland, the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur) said on Monday.

Deputy Foreign Trade Minister Ana Cecilia Gervasi is taking part in the meetings of said event, which brings together ministers and deputy ministers of the 164 WTO member countries.

Gervasi participated in the Ministerial Meeting of the Cairns Group, which is a group of 19 countries that account for more than 25% of global agricultural exports.

During such meeting, she highlighted the importance of a predictable, transparent, and non-discriminatory multilateral trade system to face the challenges posed by the global situation.

"Peru is the second most vulnerable country in Latin America in the face of the global agricultural trade crisis and the distortion of the fertilizer market," the government official remarked.

"We are taking steps to mitigate this situation, such as the diversification of sources, as well as trade openness and facilitation," she added.

This year, the WTO expects to achieve results in terms of agricultural trade and fishery subsidies, as well as to set the WTO's response to the pandemic.

Bilateral meetings

Bilateral meetings with various WTO members have been held within the framework of the 12th Ministerial Conference.

In this regard, Gervasi met with Panama's Minister of Commerce and Industry Federico Alfaro, with whom she agreed to give new impetus to trade relations between the two countries.
