With 93 votes in favor (out of 130) the plenary session of Congress approved today, in the second voting process, the constitutional reform, which bans the immediate reelection of regional presidents.

Officially, those will now be called “regional governors.”

The law also prohibits the immediate reelection of regional vice presidents and mayors of provinces.

The initiative established variations in the articles N° 191, 194 and 203 of the Constitutional text.

In this sense, a second voting process was required. The first one was conducted in October, 2014.

After the result, the Chairwoman of Congress, Ana Maria Solorzano, saluted the support of all political forces for the electoral reform.

She also indicated the regulation will be valid from the next regional and municipal elections, to be held in 2018.

The move intends to prevent authorities from seeking constant reelections.
