Peru: Over 100 kg of cocaine seized in Cusco

19:46 | Cusco (Cusco region), Jul. 25.

The Peruvian National Police (PNP) has dealt a heavy blow to drug trafficking after seizing more than 100 kg of cocaine in two operations carried out in the provinces of La Convencion and Paucartambo last weekend, the VII Macro Police Region of Cusco confirmed on Monday.

Javier Alata Yauri, driver of the truck with license plate number D4V-882, and Elias Choqqe Cusi, the co-driver, were intercepted on Quillabamba-Echarate highway.

The truck they were driving was found to be carrying 100 brick-type packages containing 103,955 kg of cocaine hidden between boxes of fruit. The police also seized two cell phones.

The seizure occurred after an effective work of intelligence carried out in collaboration with the prosecutor on duty, with whom legal proceedings and investigations are still coordinated.

Moreover, on Saturday night, agents arrested two individuals identified as Ibo Chipana, 21, and Jose Campos, 30, in Pillcopata —a town located in Kosñipata district in the province of Paucartambo.

The two men were aboard a motorcycle without a license plate. They were apprehended with a backpack containing an oval-shaped package of cocaine in one compartment and seven brick-type packages of the same drug in another compartment.

The subjects were brought to the Pillcopata police station as detainees. A report on the total weight of the drug they had is expected to be released, as it might exceed 10 kg.
