Peruvian President Ollanta Humala has inaugurated the country’s new National Institute of Child Health (INSN), a highly specialized medical facility offering comprehensive treatment to children with complex diseases.

The hospital, which opened its doors on Wednesday, has 265 beds and 47 outpatient and procedure rooms, in addition to a surgical center with 10 operating rooms and a 56-bed intensive care unit (ICU).

The INSN also comprises a burn unit, a burn ICU, a burn rehabilitation unit and three operating rooms for treatment of burn patients, which -according to President Humala- make it the premiere children's burn care center in the country.

Moreover, the facility will provide anatomical and clinical pathology services and includes a type II hemotherapy center, a stem cell bank, a state-of-the-art diagnostic imaging unit and telemedicine and distance education equipments.

"This is not a primary care center," the head of state said while addressing the INSN staff and patients. "This highly specialized and complex facility puts Peru at the forefront of South America."

President Humala was accompanied by First Lady Nadine Heredia and Health Minister Midori de Habich during his tour of the new children's hospital, located in the Lima district of San Borja.
