Peru: Non-primary sector up 3.1% in Jan-April 2019

17:58 | Lima, Jun. 21.

Peru's non-primary sector grew 3.1% in the first four-month period of the year, contributing 2.4 percentage points to the country's gross domestic product, Central Reserve Bank (BCR) reported on Friday.

Meanwhile, this sector expanded 2.7% in April, adding two percentage points to GDP growth.

The BCR says the slowdown in non-primary sectors, compared to previous months, is partly explained by the Holy Week effect on non-primary manufacture and services.

The decline in the non-primary manufacturing sector is mainly due to slower production in investment-oriented and consumer goods.

As for services, the effect is differentiated since some industries, like lodging and restaurants, are positively affected.

On the contrary, the construction sector recorded the highest growth rate so far this year due to an increase in the advance of works, despite a slight slowdown in cement consumption.

For its part, the trade sector's rate of growth remained unchanged from the previous month due to increased wholesale and retail sales.
