Peru: EsSalud presents new village for COVID-19 patients in Lima

13:12 | Lima, Jul. 16.

The State-run Social Health Insurance System (EsSalud) on Thursday inaugurated the new San Juan de Lurigancho Village for the care of COVID-19 patients.

Located in the district of the same name in the capital city, the venue is equipped with 200 beds.

EsSalud Executive-President Fiorella Molinelli stressed the importance of this new establishment, given that San Juan de Lurigancho is the district with the highest number of coronavirus cases in Lima Metropolitan Area, according to figures in EsSalud's Heat Map.

"EsSalud has replicated this prototype throughout the country. It is an isolation center for COVID-19 patients showing mild and moderate symptoms such as fever, headaches, sore throat, and loss of taste or smell. We aim to take care of vulnerable patients with risk factors," she explained.

Out of the 200 beds available in the Village, 176 are aimed at hospitalized patients with mild to moderate symptoms, while the remaining 24 will be in the intensive care units (ICU) and critical care units (CCU) set up on the site.

According to Molinelli, ICU and CCU beds are adequately equipped with mechanical ventilators, multi-parameter monitors, secretion aspirators, and other cutting-edge devices, which will help provide respiratory support to more people infected with the virus.

At the first stage, care will be delivered by 215 health professionals, who will provide treatment to infected people, according to biosafety protocols.
