Nearly 8 million people in Peru have not yet received the fourth dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, Immunizations Director at the Health Ministry (Minsa) Maria Martinez has warned.

In addition, Martinez underscored that almost 4 million people must get the third dose. Therefore, she called on the population to get immunized against COVID-19 so as to avoid becoming seriously ill from the virus.

"There is a gap of about 8 million people who have not received the fourth dose and nearly 4 million people who need to get the third dose," she said on Tuesday.

The immunization director made the remarks as Minsa brigades implemented a sweeping COVID-19 vaccination mandate at Lima-based Gamarra Commercial Emporium.

The Minsa official reported that, to date, 5,858,735 people have already received the fourth dose, while 21,004,075 people have received the third shot.

Martinez reiterated that the Ministry of Health announced that the fourth dose of the vaccine shall be administered to individuals aged 18 years and above who had the third dose at least five months ago.

Minsa reported that the first- and second-dose COVID-19 vaccination coverage has hit 90%; however, in the case of the third shot, the vaccination coverage has reached 74%, and that of the fourth dose is even lower (23.47%).
