The National Police of Peru (PNP) has strengthened intelligence operations in the Valley of Apurimac, Ene and Mantaro Rivers (VRAEM), where a terrorist attack occurred last Sunday, leaving 16 dead, General Commander of the National Police Cesar Cervantes said on Thursday.

The instruction to deploy a contingent of specialized troops to the area, conduct follow-up investigation, and collect data from various informants came as soon as the attack in the town of San Miguel del Ene (Junin region) was reported.

According to Cervantes, the operations are supervised in situ by the head of the Anti-Terrorism Directorate (Dircote), PNP General Oscar Arriola, who also directs police investigations of technical nature, in coordination with the Public Ministry and the Armed Forces.

In addition, he said, PNP Deputy General Commander, Lieutenant General Arquimedes Leon, coordinates closely with the head of the Joint Command of the Armed Forces Cesar Astudillo to supervise the work of the operational teams deployed in the area.

"Intelligence operations have been strengthened, because an event of this nature —which plunges the country into mourning— must undoubtedly prompt a reaction from law enforcement agencies. Rest assured that this is our commitment, trust your Police," Cervantes expressed.

Moreover, he emphasized that there are four PNP anti-terrorist bases operating in the VRAEM area, which are located in Pichari, Huanta, Tayacaja and Satipo, where about 2,000 agents serve under the command of General Arriola, in order to protect the population and fight this scourge.

According to the PNP General Commander, the investigations and actions to establish the facts and find those responsible are showing important progress and are carried out in a meticulous, exhaustive, and reserved manner, so as to obtain positive results as soon as possible.

The police authority also affirmed that, according to indications and the first evidence gathered during the investigation, it was determined that this reprehensible attack has the characteristics of a terrorist act.
